Estimate shown$100

Officer-issued ordinary civil citation paid on time. The DMV payment process has no separately quoted routine court assessment in this model. Debit and credit card payment adds 2.5%, excluded because cash or mailed check is available. After 30 days a penalty equal to the fine applies. Camera notices have no driver points and must be checked separately; the 2026 court opinion reproduced by Justia is the primary opinion itself, not a third-party summary.

Not a payment quote. The citation, charge, offense date and court determine the final amount.

Insurance illustration: $272.74 more per year, applying the 2026 study’s 15% state increase to the 2023 NAIC premium. Historical baseline and study sample differ; this is a scenario, not a quote.

The statutory fine and the payable amount.

The May 7, 2026 DC Court of Appeals opinion quotes the civil regulation’s $50 fine through 10 mph over and $100 fine at 11–15. DDOT publishes the $150 band at 16–20. DC Code section 50-2201.04 separately treats 20 or more over as reckless and 30 or more as aggravated reckless; criminal fines and proceedings are outside this ordinary civil amount.

Your record is a separate cost.

For an ordinary moving speeding violation, DC assigns 2 points through 10 mph over, 3 at 11–15, 4 at 16–20 and 5 at 21 or more. Criminal reckless charges have separate point consequences. Parking and photo tickets do not carry driver points.

The current DMV chart lists a 90-day suspension at 10–11 points and revocation at 12 or more, with reinstatement no earlier than six months after revocation. DC driver points remain for two years. Individual charges can trigger separate mandatory action.

DC driver points stay on the record for two years. An approved traffic-school waiver can remove points while leaving the violation on the record; insurers apply their own rules.

Official payment instructions

Ask about traffic school

For a DC moving ticket, request discretionary traffic-school approval from a DMV hearing examiner through adjudication by mail before enrolling. If approved, pay the ticket within 15 calendar days and complete the approved course within 30 days of the decision. The violation remains but its points can be removed. Out-of-state tickets require their own court approval and DC review.

Official eligibility rules

Request a hearing

DC DMV must receive payment within 30 calendar days after a moving ticket is issued to avoid a penalty equal to the original fine. Do not pay if you intend to contest: payment admits liability and ends that option. Criminal citations follow the named court's instructions.

Current DC law makes 20 mph or more above the limit reckless driving and 30 mph or more aggravated reckless driving. Dangerous conduct can also qualify independently. These are criminal offenses; no ordinary payable speeding total is shown at the numeric threshold.
