The statutory fine and the payable amount.

Ordinary Michigan traffic civil fines generally cannot exceed $100, before costs and the $40 justice-system assessment. Limited-access freeways posted at least 55 mph have statutory minimum fines of $10, $20, $30, $40 or $50 by speed band. Active school/work and listed emergency zones double the fine; they do not double every fee. The courts set published local payment schedules within the governing rules.

Your record is a separate cost.

The Walker schedule lists ordinary-road speeding points of 1, 2, 3 or 4 by band. It separately lists lower limited-access-freeway points in some bands, which this ordinary-road model does not apply. MCL 257.629c overrides ordinary points on qualifying limited-access freeways posted 55 mph or more: 1–5 over 0, 6–10 over 1, 11–15 over 2, 16–25 over 3, and 26 or more over 4. The special table excludes vehicle combinations governed by 257.627(5)–(7); this estimator restricts it to the noncommercial vehicle selection, and trailers, school buses or other specially limited vehicles require court confirmation. Walker’s 21–25-over freeway row lists 4 points, conflicting with the controlling statute’s 3; the estimator follows the statute.

Accumulating 12 points in 2 years can lead to a driver assessment reexamination. Assessment can result in restrictions, suspension or revocation; it is not an automatic suspension for every driver.

Most Michigan points remain for two years from the conviction date. Removing points does not erase the conviction or establish an insurer's rating period.

Insurance deserves its own line.

The 2026 ValuePenguin quote study reports a 17% average increase for one speeding ticket in Michigan. Your insurer, coverage and driving history can produce a different result. Read the study and its sample.

The NAIC 2023 combined average premium for Michigan is $1,572.77 per year. This historical measure combines liability, collision and comprehensive averages.

At $1,572.77 per year and 17%, the illustration adds $267.37 per year, about $22.28 per month.

Applying a 2026 quote-study percentage to the historical 2023 NAIC combined premium is illustrative math. These sources use different populations and coverage methods; this is not a measured post-ticket average or a current quote. No future premium increase is included in a court fine.

Ask about traffic school

Wait for a Secretary of State eligibility notice before taking the optional Basic Driver Improvement Course. Eligibility generally requires a noncommercial Michigan license, no more than two existing points and an eligible ticket worth three points or fewer. Complete and pass an approved course within 60 days of notification. Successful completion can prevent the new points and disclosure of the ticket to insurers once; the ticket stays on the record and all court fines, costs and course charges remain.

Michigan reckless driving addresses conscious disregard for the safety of people or property. It is a separate criminal charge with no universal mph-over cutoff in section 257.626; ordinary speeding alone does not establish every element of that offense.

The questions
behind the ticket.

How much is 35 over in Michigan?

The estimate shown is $285. This is the Walker court’s posted total, not a Michigan-wide fine. The schedule adds $10 for an accident; zone and freeway rules differ.

Will my insurance go up?

A conviction can affect premiums, but your insurer uses its own rules. The 2026 ValuePenguin quote study reports a 17% average increase for one speeding ticket in Michigan. Your insurer, coverage and driving history can produce a different result. A points-free outcome does not promise an unchanged premium.

Is this the amount I should pay?

No. The estimate explains a published schedule. Pay only the amount confirmed by the court handling the citation, through its official instructions.

What if I do not respond on time?

Respond to the court within the period printed on your citation. Contact the 59th District Court to confirm the charge, court date and any default charges. Missing a deadline can add consequences. Ask the court about extensions or payment help before it passes.
